Due to lack of funding to sustain the service after the current contract period ends with MSD on the 31 January 2009, PACE in Taranaki will be discontinued at this point.

The Taranaki Arts Community Trust (TACT) will be looking at options to provide a service for artists through the Real TArt Gallery next year, but this will not be up and running until mid 2009.

PROGRESS REPORT & BRIEF SUMMARY

Pathways to Arts and Cultural Employment was actively implemented in Taranaki with the establishment of a PACE Office, in the new Real TART Gallery premises in the old Masters building on Egmont Street, New Plymouth in April 2006.

A variety of amazingly talented people have been referred onto the program including, musicians, painters, writers, photographers, weavers, designers and other mixed media artists.

Some clients have found full time or part time work or moved into self-employment, some transferred to other regions for increased work opportunities, (or to seek fame and fortune), others chose not to complete the program for a variety of reasons.

Liaison with various organizations such as Venture Taranaki, IRD, Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth District Council, WITT and Puke Ariki have and will result in information sharing and the presentation of seminars and workshops which are dedicated to the professional development of the arts industry within our region.

The outcome being to help people to take what they do seriously and validate it as a career choice in order to reach their full potential in their chosen profession, or face the realities that a portfolio career with many income streams is often the way to create a sustainable career in the arts.

WHAT IS ‘PACE’ ANYWAY?
PACE is a Work and Income initiative, the Taranaki Arts Community Trust (TACT) has been contracted to provide this program in Taranaki, although help through our program is not exclusive to Work & Income clients. PACE is a capacity building program which aims to assist those who are willing and able to pursue a career in the arts and creative industries to move towards sustainable employment and self-sufficiency. By enabling cultural workers to identify ‘art’ as their first career choice should they need to register with Work and Income, artists do not go onto a separate benefit, but are ‘flagged’ for the PACE membership group. People are generally on the program for a period of 12 months or less, are still governed by their benefit obligations and still retain their Work & Income Case Manager.

The following are areas to enhance Artists professional practice skills that advice, information and workshops are developed to cover: - Career Planning, PACE and Job Seeker Agreements , Income Reporting for PACE, Arts Business Development , Book-keeping, Artists and Tax, Fundraising and Sponsorship, Media and Publicity, Portfolio Development, Commission Work, Teaching and Retail, Contracts and Copyright.

For Artists registered with Work and Income wanting to join the PACE program they will need to be referred to the PACE Office at the Real TART Gallery by their Work and Income Case Manager.

For Artists not registered with Work and Income, but who require help on any of the above, please contact Joanne Wilkes at the PACE Office for a consultation or to register interest in future business / professional development work shops.
